How To Dress Your Child Like A Royal

by Team Kathryns 06 Oct 2020

Prince George and his royal siblings, Charlotte and Louis, are undoubtedly some of the best-dressed children in the public eye. Just like their mother, Kate Middleton, the Cambridge children have the power to make any outfit they wear sell out in a matter of minutes.

We love the cute style of royal baby clothing — but would have felt overwhelmed if we had to decide on a suitable outfit in which to greet former President Barack Obama. Prince George, however, took it all in his stride and met the then-US president wearing his fluffy dressing gown (even royal babies have a bedtime it seems) and the world swooned.

If you are looking to steal the style of the royal babies clothing, then we’ve gathered together some top tips on how to dress your child like royalty.

What styles and brands do the royal children wear?

The royals have always dressed the youngest members of the family in a classic and traditional style. Cardigans are very much a staple of Prince George’s outfits — he wore a cosy knitted royal blue one when he was photographed on the steps of the Lindo Wing when Prince William took him to meet his baby sister for the first time. Absorba have a similar blue cardigan available for fans of royal baby clothing.

Long socks and T-bar shoes are also a signature look for the young prince, especially when teamed with shorts. Prince George’s outfits continue this royal trend which echoes back to the days when all young boys wore shorts, while trousers were reserved for older children and adults.

Princess Charlotte also has a firm fashion style and is often seen wearing pinafore or smock-style dresses with Peter-Pan collars, tights and Mary-Jane shoes. Her outfits are accessorised with headbands and cute bows of varying sizes and colours.

The key to emulating the style of the Cambridge’s adorable kids is to stick to the classics. Kate Middleton has said that she prefers a traditional style of clothing for prince George so that photos of her children will remain timeless for years to come.

How to dress like Prince George

Prince George’s clothing fashion style is usually very traditional, but we love seeing him dressed in a more casual vibe. Kate Middleton is a fan of Breton-striped tops and so is her son. His official third birthday photo showed the prince wearing a navy and white striped jumper embellished with a whale. To truly capture Prince George’s fashion style, no little prince should be without the Fairisle wool blue jumper worn by the young royal in a photo shoot with his parents and younger sister. The jumper was designed by Spanish fashion house Fina Ejerique — a brand that the Duke and Duchess favour for all three of their children. Princess Charlotte also wore the label in her first official photo shoot with the baby Prince Louis.

It appears that even royal babies receive the hand-me-downs from their siblings. Prince Louis was spotted wearing a pair of red and white shortie dungarees in photographs released of the royal youngsters at the Chelsea Flower Show. They seemed to be the same pair that Prince George wore on a royal tour to Australia with his parents in 2014. Just like her brothers, Princess Charlotte is a mini-style icon. Lovers of royal-style clothing can replicate her traditional look with Portuguese brand Piccola Speranza, who craft a traditional selection of formal wear for girls from 3 months to 12 years old. The range includes this smart navy pinafore and blouse set which is a very similar style to Charlotte’s school-look.

Of course, even the royals need to dress down occasionally—and Prince George sported casual look for his official 7th birthday photo with a camouflage t-shirt, tousled hair and an adorable gapped-tooth smile.

The Duchess also favours High Street brands and has been spotted browsing dresses with her daughter in their local Sainsburys—which means fans of the royal kids clothing style can dress their children just like Kate dresses the mini-Cambridges.
